A Fairy Tale Town
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the perfect place for anyone interested in medieval towns. This small city is located on the Romantic Road. The road is Germany’s most popular road trip route. It is definitely the most pristine city on this 400-kilometer route. The walls and ditches surrounding the city, well-preserved old stone houses take visitors to medieval times.
Everything For My Mum!
Among all these beauties, the main reason I visited this city was my mother’s wish. I couldn’t stand her insisting on a trip to Rothenburg every time she visited me. Finally, I planned this trip for her birthday. So we made a family holiday in one of the most beautiful towns in Germany. Maybe even in the World. Good that she insisted. 🙂
Hidden Behind The Walls
When you arrive in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the city walls welcome you. First, park the car in a proper place. After that, you can start walking towards one of the old city gates. At the first moment, you feel like ”Is this really that famous city?”. When you pass through the city’s walls, you find yourself in a medieval city. The fairy tale starts right there.
You let yourself into the historical texture of the city. Start to ramble on the streets. Because every street is a nice one! After a while, you come across the city wall again. Because as beautiful as it is, this city is also a very small one!
You Can Go Up To The Medieval Walls
From the walls surrounding the entire city in medieval times, approximately 2.5 kilometers are left today and free for a visit. It is very enjoyable to go up the stairs with a ladder and look at the city from above. There are also buildings that look even better when you look from there.
Old Town Hall
There is also the city hall, like every European city. The old town hall and the old pharmacy right next to it are quite impressive. This is also a must-have Rothenburg ob der Tauber activity:
Sit on the stairs of the town hall. Have a look around. They actually have free wi-fi here, so everyone is spending some time there 🙂 there are also many cafes and restaurants in the square. You can discover Bavarian cuisine, especially beer, in any of them.
One Of The Most Famous Buildings In The World
When you walk out of the square and continue in one of the streets, one of the most famous buildings of Germany (maybe even the world) comes out. It is very interesting to be in front of this building that we are used to seeing in photos all the time, but I think it is more interesting to think that there are people who really live in this building, and what they feel when their homes are constantly photographed by foreigners 🙂
Sweet Treats | Rothenburg ob der Tauber
There are many souvenir shops on the streets. It is possible to get very cute gifts around here. The famous food “Schneeballen” is a cookie-like dessert that you can find in every patisserie. I was the only family member in Rothenburg to eat the whole pastry, although I tried and disliked it in another place on the Romantic Road. So highly recommended here 🙂
Christmas Town | Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Another excursion point not to be missed is the Käthe Wohlfahrt shop in Rothenburg, one of the world’s most famous Christmas decoration producers. In this cute shop, you can buy some colorful decorations for the upcoming year.
Tourists Everywhere | Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Another thing that you can find on the streets all year long, is the tourists 🙂 With the effect of the beautiful weather, there were so many tourists everywhere we went, that we had to come back again the next morning to be able to take pictures as we wanted. When we had the photos we want, we went back to the hotel for breakfast 🙂
The Palace Garden | Rothenburg ob der Tauber
If you continue to walk a little further out of town, you will encounter the palace garden. Here, a little further away from the city, you can enjoy views of Rothenburg.
Full Of Museums | Rothenburg ob der Tauber
There are also many museums in Rothenburg. I am not a museum-type traveler and live in that city rather than visiting the museums, but there are a few such as the puppet museum, the toy museum, the Christmas museum, the museum of torture if you are interested.
Easy To Walk | Rothenburg
It is possible and very comfortable to walk all over the city. Just a half of a day is enough if you want to wander around but I think this city deserves 1.5-2 days to enjoy it.
When To Visit Rothenburg
We visited Rothenburg in August. The weather was absolutely amazing for sightseeing, but as in every place during summer, it was full of tourists. In addition, after August there are many festivals here, unfortunately, we couldn’t catch them. And there is no doubt that it will be a fabulously decorated Christmas. So I think Rothenburg is beautiful in each season, but it might be more beautiful in the autumn-winter months. Just a small tip for your travel plans 😉
