As the weather gets colder, drinking water leaves its place to hot drinks. I have a large tea collection at home, but sometimes look for other drinks anyway. In the past, my first choice would be salep, a Turkish drink made with a kind of dried orchid root, milk and sugar. But the market bought ones are full of artificial flavors and sugar unfortunately, so I do not want to use them anymore and the natural salep that my mother brought from Turkey was a bit disappointing. I didn’t get any saIep taste, maybe because that I got used to the strong artificial flavors but it’s like milk thickened with starch to me.
I started to look for something new
That’s why I started to look for something new, and about a year ago I tried the golden milk, which is already known and consumed in some cultures. I am glad I tried, it became my favorite winter drink.
Of course, there is milk and plenty of spices in this drink, a totally healthy and healing choice. It is also very photogenic with the yellow color it gets from the turmeric so I take a couple of photos each time I prepare a cup.
Health Benefits Of Turmeric
Turmeric is already the favorite spice of recent years. In addition to the preventive and therapeutic supportive features against all types of cancer, there are many benefits that are still discovered each day. For instance:
- Helps to remove toxins from the body
- Can relieve rheumatic pain
- Can balance diabetes
- Balances cholesterol
- Strengthen the immune system
And so on… It would be enough to do a short research on the internet for more.
How To Consume Turmeric?
There are two points to consider when using turmeric. First, the turmeric must be consumed with black pepper. Because black pepper increases the absorption of the active substance in the turmeric around 20-30 times. The second is to consume together with a healthy fat. This can be a natural fat in foods such as avocado, as well as a healthy fat to add to the drink as a supplement. Here too, the goal is to increase absorption.
I add turmeric to all kinds of vegetable dishes. And of course to the main topic of this article, the golden milk. After adding turmeric, black pepper and oil, every further addition depends on taste. A little hot pepper in the vegetable dishes and the cinnamon and honey in golden milk are the top choices for me. The amounts depend on taste, but I will give you my favorite recipe here.
Gold milk:
· 1 cup of milk of choice (I usually use only almond milk, or almond and coconut milk mix. If I’m going to mix ¼ cup of coconut milk with ¾ cup almond milk.)
· 1 teaspoon turmeric
· ½ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
· 1 teaspoon cinnamon (or instead of pumpkin spice, chai spice)
· 1 teaspoon of coconut oil (if I haven’t used the coconut milk)
· 1 teaspoon honey
I put the milk and spices into a pot and warm till boiling temperature. Cook around 5 minutes and add the honey after removing from the heat. Consume hot.
Be Cautious
Although it is a really healthy spice, turmeric can cause allergic effects or cause side effects when consumed excessively. Let’s drink, but responsibly 🙂
