Hallstatt

How to Get to Hallstatt?

The easiest way to reach Hallstatt is to rent a car from Salzburg. The distance is about 70 km and the road offers you spectacular views.

Another option is train, but you need to do the train-bus-boat transfer and this can be a bit stressful.

If you don’t have a car, participating in daily tours you can see in the city will be a good alternative in terms of saving time.

Alternatively, you can rent a car in Munich and drive about 3 hours. On this road you will be accompanied by wonderful landscape, too.

It is also possible to reach from Vienna by train.

For all publich transportation possibilites here is the official site of Austrian Railways.

How Long Should Be Planned For Hallstatt?

Only 1 full day is enough for the inside of the village and the mine, you do not even need to stay.

But I think you should enjoy Hallstatt. We stayed here for 3 nights and were never bored. If it was up to me, I could even stay for another 3 nights.

Where to stay?

I can highly recommend the guest house we stayed. Penision Sarstein is a wonderful pension run by a local couple.

The owners are quite flexible, we could use every area of the hotel comfortably. We ate dinner in the peaceful garden every day with our own groceries. We drank our morning coffee again against the fascinating mountains.

All rooms have a great view of the lake. There is also a private beach, you can swim in the lake when the weather is good.

There is also a dining table and sun loungers in this garden, you can enjoy yourselves with the company of swans.

What to Eat?

I would also like to mention this, but we usually ate in the garden of the hotel we stayed. Only on the first day we tried lunch at the restaurant Bräugasthof. Everybody was satisfied with their dish. We could not sit because the weather was rainy but the garden at the lake also looks quite nice.

When to Go?

We were in Hallstatt at the end of April and the weather was very nice. I think, every season would be amazing here. In autumn all the colours of nature will be there, or I’m sure it will turn into another fairy tale land under the snow in winter.

In the winter time the activities would be limited, should be checked beforehand. For example, the salt mine is only open from April to October.

Last Word

Visiting Hallstatt is something that I am glad that I’ve done. Although I say that for the most of the places I visited 😀 But with great company, spending a few days in such a beautiful place was definitely a priceless holiday.
